Bladder issues

Bladder issues

I’m not sure what exactly is going on with my bladder these days. I know I have issues, had them for years, but they’ve seemed somewhat worse over the last few weeks. I am not sure if I don’t have some kind of bladder infection. The problem is that is varies day to day, something bladder infection tend not to do. However between my water pills and Toviaz, who knows.

Urinary tract infections don’t always cause signs and symptoms, but when they do they may include: https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/urinary-tract-infection/symptoms-causes/syc-20353447

• A strong, persistent urge to urinate

• A burning sensation when urinating

• Passing frequent, small amounts of urine

• Urine that appears cloudy

• Urine that appears red, bright pink or cola-colored — a sign of blood in the urine

• Strong-smelling urine

• Pelvic pain, in women — especially in the center of the pelvis and around the area of the pubic bone

I have none of that. If I have any discomfort, I don’t feel it thanks to dulled sensation in that area. What leads me to think something is wrong is the number of accidents I’ve been having. Thankfully I wear protective pads always but they use to be “just in case”, especially when I’m home. Lately they’ve been necessity and I’m going through sometime three a day!!! The biggest changing time at night. It is just very bizarre. It hasn’t ever been like that and certainly not at night. I just am not getting to the bathroom in time. Thankfully it is not happening while i sleep, small thing but a big grateful thing. Its like my warning meter suddenly went from an already pitiful five minute warning down to a five second warning. I can’t even get my blankets off that fast.

Then I go the complete other way. There are days that I haven’t taken my water pill and I have hesitancy. That’s where I feel the sensation that I need to go to the bathroom but can’t get the stream of urination to start. This is the main reason I’ve ruled out bladder infection. I don’t think I’d have both urgency and hesitancy and have an infection. I’ve had many UTI’s in my life so it isn’t like I don’t know what they are like.

Does that mean then that my MS symptom is getting worse or that I need a different medication? That is the part I may need to discuss with my doctor. I don’t make these decisions on a few weeks of issues. I need to see if this is going to continue to be an increasing issue. It’s frustrating I can tell you that. I’ve dealt with bladder issues for years and they only get worse and worse, unfortunately. This is one of the more disheartening symptoms of MS. ?

  1. I started out like you posted and the went to complete incontinence. Fortunately my gyno-urologist suggest botox in my bladder which I have twice a year and I am in control again. But you have to learn to self-cath

  2. My mom got a superpubic catheter placed last October and it’s so helpful. She used to get bladder infections all the time, and that caused her to develop seizures. As you know, with MS, you can have bladder spasms and inability to completely drain your bladder. I would go see a urologist when it’s safe to do so. Also, Botox isn’t right for everyone. In mom’s case with her MS, it wasn’t.
From what you’ve posted, if you don’t have a bladder infection now, it’s sounds like you’re on track to get one. As you know, urine retention can lead to a bladder infection. Could just mean that your bladder muscle are getting weaker and not your meds, but I’m no doctor.
My mom doesn’t have much feeling down there either. It’s been a “curse” but also a blessing when I’ve had to change her Catheter. I could talk for hours on this subject actually. It’s been an all consuming issues for years. It’s a little less now, which is good. It’s not for everyone, but it’s freed her from the constant feeling of having to go/being wet/needing a pad and clothes change. Also, what about taking something for your incontinence? Mom takes myrbetriq which also helps prevents UTIS. She took Detrol for a few years, but that didn’t do much for her.
Also, my mom just turn 71 on April 29th and I take care of her fulltime. She may have lost her mobility, but she still has an amazing spirit. Thank you for your blog posts and God bless you.

    1. Thank you so much for your insight I actually started a long time ago pushing on my bladder which helped me empty the whole thing. So that part I’ve been good with. I think we are some of my problems are is because I also have to take a water pill for Edema. It’s like a Catch-22 to take a water pill when you have bladder issues. I just go to the bathroom every couple hours and I have very little warning so I leak on my way as soon as my bladder knows I’m gonna be by the toilet. I just can’t hold it. Anyway yes, when I could safely go to a doctor again the urologist is definitely going to be on my list. I take Toviaz for the bladder. I was under Detrol to for a while didn’t work for me either.
Bless your mom for being such high spirit is and bless you for taking care of her. I have an aid that’s with me five days a week and my daughter still only 21 and in college
