Juicing, master cleanse and all that jazz
For the longest time I used to juice for a day of the week. My thought process on this is save the energy of digestion and let my body have energy for something else like healing. I use to stick with healthy juices. I always had tomato juice in there from trader joes or whole foods that had nothing artificial in it. Tomato juice even though acidic was a filling juice. I’d always have a couple carrot juice never a favorite but I’d get through it. An orange or a grapefruit again the fresh kind and that was that. Then I heard of the master cleanse a detox plan that can go as much as 21 days. This was supposed to really recondition the body, remove all toxins, loose weight and return you to optimal performance. The recipe is simply lemon juice, 2 tablespoons organic maple syrup, 1/10 teaspoon cayenne pepper and water. You drink 8-10 glasses or something per day. First time I tried it by day 2 I threw up in my car. Second time I did 3 days. Third time 4 days but had dizzy spells when I’d stand up. Fourth time I did 5 days and the dizzy spells were so bad I knew I had to stop. A little silly because if you really think about it, all your doing is starving yourself. Your not really detoxing anything there is no scientific proof to support any claims made by detox diets according to WebMD. Detoxification is a process our body does naturally. You know those things we call the liver, kidneys, colon, lungs and even our skin all help to purify our body. Guess what else? Our bodies absorb nutrients from the good we set to give us energy to heal and function. Not many nutrients coming into our body through lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper now is there. I’d think that if you really were doing this kind of cleanse that you’d be lethargic, your body would be breaking down muscle for protein and you’d be hungry. I’m not a doctor and these are only my own opinions there is no claims on anything I’m saying but I think this is a poor way to detox. The true way is to eat natural food lots of raw veggies and fruits so your body can absorbe the correct nutrients it needs. Eating those superfoods like kale would benefit your body more than starving it. I read somewhere all calories are not created equal. Like celery which actually has a negative calorie count. The reason why is because the amount of calories in a stalk of celery compared to the amount of energy needed to digest that stalk of celery makes it negative. Proteins cost 20-30% of the calories to burn. So if your eating a 100 calorie piece of chicken because of the digestion process it’s like consuming 70-80 calories after digestion. Carbohydrates 10-15% so 100 calorie carbohydrate costs you 85-90 calories after digestion. My guess is this is why Akins and other high protein low carb diets get the information. So all in all my opinion is detoxing is dumb just results in you starving yourself. Juicing once a day probably does nothing but made you flush out a little water weight for a day. Protein is still the way to go but not high fat lean proteins. Just a little food for though today.
