Things that go bump in the night
During Boomer’s memorial I put his old collar around his urn. He didn’t wear his collar much, he hated his collar, but it had all his tags and it just seemed fitting. I don’t know when I moved to a standard chain as a collar or started using the leash alone as a collar, but I know it was for the majority of his life. We’d only put the chain on him when he’d go out for a walk, otherwise he didn’t have a collar. Boomer passed away 2 weeks ago from this time. At roughly 3:30am the strangest thing happened. The puppy woke up and was whining in her crate. I just had her out to pee at 1:00am so I knew it couldn’t be that. She’s actually really good sleeping through the night but this night she was whining. I let her out for one second, she ran around to the other side of my bed (where Boomer use to jump onto the bed) and ran back into her crate. A moment later, my Marshmellow, my 8 year old who sleeps under my blankets, started howling from under them. He howls when he sees me, my daughter or someone he knows outside the house talking or in the car or gardening but not coming inside. He barks at everything else. If he hears noises outside when he’s in my room he’d bark and run into the living room to look outside. In my room he can’t see out the window. I don’t remember anytime he ever howled without seeing something or someone outside. He howled for all of 10 seconds then stopped and everyone got quiet and went back to sleep. The first thing I did the next morning is removed Boomer’s collar off the urn and put it on the bear. I told my daughter this and she told me she heard the sound of Boomer’s paws on the floor when he walked Sunday night too. Last night 3:30am puppy was whining again. I said good night Boomer and all got quiet.
