Star Wars Trilogy
Once a year I need to watch the original Star Wars trilogy. I’m not saying that some of the new movies they’ve made over the years are bad, but nothing beats the original. Mark Hamill, aka Luke Skywalker, was my first boyfriend, although he was unaware of this fact. I must say that I still have a thing for his character in the originals as well as the newer movies. My favorite scene is still him looking at the evening sunset.
I don’t know what it is about this scene but it always stuck with me. Maybe it’s the music playing in the background or the the idea of two suns, but I think it is his facial expression. Like I understood what he was feeling in that moment. Like somehow I related. Now the first time I saw Star Wars I was probably 10. I certainly wasn’t upset because my parents were holding me back from my dream. Making me stay another season to help on the farm. I have no idea what I could have possibly related to in this scene at the age of 10 other than sadness. Yet even as a child, from the first time I saw Star Wars, this was my favorite scene. Today I think it is the sadness that he shows but also the hope he seems to look to. Of course this is my interpretation but after 40+ years, it still moves me.
Empire Strikes Back is actually my favorite of the three movies. It is the darkest of the three. They all go through struggles in this film. Don’t get me wrong I love happy endings, but Empire was things don’t always work out for the heroes. Sometimes it is nice to see the heroes struggle. Movies usually have a beginning, middle and end. Every marvel movie is the same. The hero is introduced, meets the villain, villain kicks heroes ass, hero eventually defeats villain, saves the world, movie ends. Empire wasn’t like that. It ended with a distraught Luke, a carbon frozen Han, and a search to find him. Not a happy ending. I mean Darth Vader kick everyone ass in that movie. This was in in 1980. George Lucas was way before his time, leaving a movie with a cliffhanger. I think for me, especially now, I like the dark undertones of Empire. I can still watch the movie and pick up something new. I mean really there are no dancing teddy bears at the end of Empire.
I guess that brings me to Return of the Jedi. I love the beginning of Jedi. I mean LOVE. Even I had a thing for Princess Leia in the gold outfit. I can watch the whole beginning sequence a million times over again. Then I think the Ewoks had too much screen time. I think I loved them when I was younger. I probably wanted one. I also wanted R2D2 and the walking garage can that went kronk kronk on the Jawa transport. The more I watched Jedi the more annoying they became. Nothing like Jar Jar Binks in Phantom Menace but still annoying. I loved every part that included my boyfriend Luke, he was very sexy by the Jedi. My second favorite scene is when he lights the body of Darth Vader.
However this wasn’t my favorite of the three. I think there was weird acting points between Princess Leia and Han. “Hold me”, I mean it sounded so dumb. The end when everyone is dancing, have you ever watch Lando’s….he looks just awkward. Don’t get me wrong, I love Jedi but parts annoy me so it’s ranks number 3 of the 3. Yet it is number 3 of all Star Wars movies made.
I’m up to Empire now. I don’t know how I turned this into an entire blog. I’m sure everyone has an opinion of Star Wars movies. After all they’ve been around for a long time. I think I am going to watch the movie now. May the force be with you.
