Apple came out with a two-step security verification on the Apple ID. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204152 You had to sign up for it. With that enrollment it came with a 16 numeric/alphabetical code called a recovery key. Basically to manage anything on your apple account, you are required to have 2 of 3 security pieces of information; the password, a device or the recovery key.
