Am I getting old?
I played mahjong all day yesterday and I had a great time. Is this the sign?
I had a great time.
American mahjong is played with four players using tiles stamped with Chinese symbols. The goal of the game is to be the first, by picking and discarding, to match one’s tiles to a specific hand from the annually distributed scorecard published by the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) and American Mah-Jongg Association (AMJA).[2] Scoring is done by matching the points assigned to each pre-determined hand on the annually distributed NMJL card & AMJA card. Most games don’t score, they bet and you win money based on the score points. Meaning if the score is 25, you win a quarter for the hand. The group I play with doesn’t bet, we just play for fun.
I just wish my multiple sclerosis didn’t cause me problems. I still find it hard to hold myself upright with my core. I use a pillow which helps a little but it was still difficult. I did play for almost 4 hours which was my record so that says something. My left hand is useless in mixing the tiles, building my wall and picking but I’ve been getting around that with my right hand and the ladies help. The bathroom of course is always an issue but I wear pads just incase and I try to go frequently. The only thing I wish is we played in my house instead of at a temple but I have been ok making it work. The ladies are lovely.
I guess if it makes me old, I’m ok with that. I’m having fun, I’ve met new people, I’m out of my house and I’m doing something new. Who new? I would have learned years ago. I highly recommend it to all. I found my teacher at the local library. It’s a really fun pastime for anyone but especially us with a chronic illness.
