Firework Anxiety in Minx

Firework Anxiety in Minx

Fireworks have already started being shot off by me. Not even big ones. The ones that you buy on the side of the road for cheap. They make more noise than light up the sky. My Minx has been going crazy. By far he has the worst reaction to fireworks than any other dog I’ve owned. He gets crazy, barks nonstop while running laps. It’s bad. I knew that I was going to need something for him other than the simple recommendations on the web. https://multipleexperiences.org/2019/07/04/9-ways-to-hopefully-help-your-dog-stay-calm-during-fireworks/. I wrote to my vet.

This is what I got back:

When it comes to noise aversion treatment, there are two categories: Pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical. Due to the severity of noise aversion episodes, we usually recommend medications to help them get through with minimum anxiety.

The most common medications we use are Sileo, Gabapentin, and trazodone.
Sileo is a gel medication that is applied to the gums. It reduces anxiety and induces mild sedation. It can be re-dosed every 2 hours if needed.
Gabapentin and Trazodone and oral anxiety medications that are given two hours before stressful events, and can last up to 12 hours.

Non-pharmaceutical products available include things like CBD for dogs, thunder shirts, and relaxing hormonal treats like Composure.
Let me know if you have any further questions, and what you think would work best for Minx with these options,

Are you kidding….Gabapentin???? God knows I have that medication on hand. I don’t think many MS patients haven’t been on gabapentin at one point.

Needless to say we decided that we’d use gabapentin for Minx to get him through the next weekend. On July 1 is the Freeport, where I live, fireworks. Those are done right across the way from me. So my poor little boy is going to probably be sedated the entire weekend. It’s a good thing that I went down to 100 mg because that is the recommended dose. 100 to 200 mg based on his weight. Go figure. Isn’t that convenient. Hopefully it will help because otherwise this will be a long weekend coming up. I’ll be home with him but I don’t help. He just jumps all over me. I’ll be scratched up he’ll be loopy. ? OMG.
