Tinnitus with Multiple Sclerosis

Tinnitus with Multiple Sclerosis

I have had the sound of cicadas in my ears for years. When I say years, I really mean like 15 years easily. It’s never quiet when everything else is quiet. I have slept with my TV on out of necessity because it blocks out the noise in my ears. I don’t think it’s affected my hearing, but it’s certainly affected other points in my life. I think of my daughter who is deaf. She has cochlear implants in both ears. When she takes them off she has absolute silence. She hears nothing. I can’t turn off the noise in my ears ever. It can be very annoying when meditating. I have looked this up, and of course it can be caused by multiple sclerosis. Everything can be caused by multiple sclerosis. Why? MS damages the nerves that transmit sounds to the brain. Of course it does.

According to AI,

  • This damage can cause abnormal electrical activity in the auditory system, leading to tinnitus.
  • Tinnitus can also be caused by inflammation or lesions in the brainstem, which is involved in hearing.

There is no cure and I just live with this buzzing. I have come to realize that I think it’s only in my left ear. I was just wondering if anyone else suffers with this. They say that 20% of MS patients developed this but mostly it’s in people with progressive forms.

  1. I do not have MS, but I have experienced tinnitus during the past few years. One of my good friends told me that he suffers from it, too. I looked stuff up from doctors on YouTube who talk about stimulating the Vagus nerve, but thus far I’ve been too lazy to carry out their protocols. Like you, I find music and other sounds help distract me from it. It’s a shame. I really like silence.

  2. Try a white noise machine when you rest or sleep. Try to set it to the same noise you hear from tinnitus. Now you are listening to noise you can’t tell where it is coming from. I have MS for 35 years, tinnitus for about half of them. I think it’s because of Rock n Roll history.
